Australian MEDICINE JOB FAQs

  • What is It Like Being a General Medicine Locum Doctor?

Working as a Locum doctor offers exceptional personal and work-life balance. These doctors have more control over their working hours and the type of work they engage in. They can create a schedule that works best for them.  As a locum doctor, you will have career flexibility, personal and financial fulfilment, travel opportunities, and gain career experience.

General practitioners are required to carry out administrative duties, but locums are not. Locums are hired for a specific set of duties. Instead of working at a desk, they spend their time working with patients on the floor.

Being a locum general medicine doctor offers an outstanding work-life balance. The career also gives you more control over the hours you work and the kind of work you do.

As a locum, you can combine and match shifts to design the most convenient schedule. You get to work with various patients, make new friends, and expand your professional networks.

Locums also gain valuable work experience as they help hospitals, patients, and communities in need. The various fieldwork broadens your professional experience and may aid your career launch (if you’ve just graduated).

You'll have to develop your ability to adjust to different circumstances as a locum. Even though it can be difficult, every situation you encounter expands your professional experience. Working as a general medicine locum can open up the possibility of living abroad and getting to know different cultures. To work in your desired country, you only need the appropriate medical certifications.

Working as a locum also pays handsomely. Part-time locum work can fetch you the extra money you need to pay off student medical debt or replenish your savings. You'll always have work if you work as a locum doctor. Locum physicians are used to cover vacant posts or when staff specialists are required to take leave.

These jobs come at junior positions; resident and registrar level.

The rate depends on location and urgency of vacancy to be filled. There are also considerable tax advantages as a Locum GP is employed as a contractor. So, most of the additional expenses are tax-deductible and can be offset against earnings. We provide doctors with locum jobs in the disciplines of anaesthesia, emergency medicine, intensive care, psychiatry and general practice. • How Long Do Locum Medicine Jobs Last?

It can vary from assignment to assignment, but most locum jobs last between two weeks to two months, depending on the situation and need. Different contract lengths make it easy to test out locum tenens work and select lengthier contracts if the doctor wishes to.

Shorter contracts may be appropriate for providers with a busy personal life, while longer ones may suit those who love focusing entirely on their profession and have few obligations outside of it. Many doctors have turned locum into a long-term career quite successfully.

Both VR GPs and non-VR GPs do the same work in general practice, with the only difference being non-VR GPs attract a lower rebate from Medicare. Non-VR GPs may be eligible to access the same rates as VR GPs if they work in rural or remote areas.

Locum GP VMO who also cover on-call after hours are required to have additional emergency qualifications and therefore attract much higher rates.

The duration of postings can vary depending on the employment. General medicine locums typically work for a few weeks to a few months at a time, depending on the reason for the locum's need.

However, your level of medical expertise will influence your eligibility for a locum position and the pay you will receive. Your options for jobs and the pay you can earn will increase if you have extra abilities such as advanced life support training certificates or expertise with paediatric crises.
